Search for Vampires

I want to do an audit of my home to look for Vampire ("phantom") power use - I know that I leave a lot of little devices on and when they are added up for 24x7 they really use a lot of power! My goal is to find and fix one vampire device each day.

One of my challenges is to track down "vampire" power use in my home - a good Halloween season adventure!  This is power that doesn't appear is on - for example a charger or device controlled by a remote that is not really totally off.  In my office tonight I hooked up a "Kill-a-Watt" meter (an inexpensive power meter) to check on my stereo components (old TV, DVD, old VCR) which have been on for a quite a few years. It turns out there was a draw of 28 watts.   28 x 24hrs = 684 watt hours a day or 20 KWHr per month.  At our power rate of $.0845 that's $20.40 a year!
I'm using garlic on this Vampire an uplugging!

In trying to find "vampire" power use, our basement tv and old dvd player were still connected.  I added a power strip and turned it off. Now when we rarely want to use this old tv, we'll just turn on the power strip.  4 vampire devices and their power sucking vanquished!
