Betsy Becker 10/28/2016 9:33 PMGetting out in nature and walking almost every day for the last 2 weeks has been good for me in every way. The last little critter I saw tonight was a beautiful little skunk that safely made it up into the forest off the road. I have renewed motivation to keep on the mission of de-cluttering and recycling. And I have enjoyed my meals much more without absent-mindedly just devouring food with the TV in front of me. -
Betsy Becker 10/28/2016 9:19 PMLined up a taker for the oak table and chairs for this weekend. Oh I hope they take it, otherwise have to pack it up and haul it in the trailer to give away. Living in this much "clutter" is hard on the mind, body and soul. No takers on other items on Craigslist, so either try other venues or off to Goodwill. Or list everything for free, which has really worked well for the woodstove insert--about 12 people want that! At least that way I know someone wants it and there is less a risk of just being thrown away. -
Betsy Becker 10/28/2016 9:08 PMAlso stopped at Goodwill to look for items for my class project and found some perfect little branches that will become little holly trees! Again, reuse! And at the whopping price of $1.66, which cost less than my Milky Way candybar! -
Betsy Becker 10/28/2016 9:06 PMAWESOME! After class today I did my recycle duties and in the process retrieved an almost brand new thermarest camping pad a man was throwing into the plastic recycle. After retrieving it, and thanking him, I also let him know they couldn't recycle that sort of thing at Far West. He was glad it got a home and so was I! He had only hours to go before having to have his home empty for closing after the home sale and was trying to get rid of the rest of his stuff. Also got his great appliance pan, which work great for under cat litter boxes. So didn't just recycle, but REUSE AS WELL! -
Betsy Becker 10/28/2016 9:02 PMIn addition to walking during our field trip, walked another two miles tonight. Heard a very loud strange noise then saw a huge owl fly over our heads--owls make all kinds of sounds as well as the normal hooting. -
Betsy Becker 10/26/2016 10:39 PMCompleted my walking--it even stopped raining. Found a lost cow and saw the "goat house" on Wingham Farms in Manning. Those goats have it made! My favorite place to donate clothing has closed due to lack of operating funds--how sad. I may have another place to go--don't like to give everything to Goodwill. I try to search out other places of need. My recycle load is growing in my car--to go to Far West next day or two. -
Betsy Becker 10/25/2016 8:50 PMContinuing to fill my car with recyclables--the usual plastic bags, plastic from home and other locations, waxed cardboard containers, etc. Got my walk in but not as far as I would have liked. Decided not to go by the loose large dogs in the dark! And still eating meals away from TV, newspaper, any reading material, computer, etc., only cat and human distractions. . . -
Betsy Becker 10/24/2016 3:08 PMI'm feeling much better today--thanks April. I think I will finally donate my giant box of clothes tomorrow to the Family Resource Center in Hillsboro. It's about time. -
Betsy Becker 10/24/2016 2:54 PMRegarding the question about the bats from Christine: During the warmer months, I can hear the bats squeaking as they get ready to fly out for the night, just before dark. My office is next to the bat chimney/house and I can hear them through the walls! This chimney will soon have to be reinforced so it doesn't fall apart completely. It was built in approx. 1930 and is in rough shape. I will need to contact a chimney expert for this, and also to place some kind of barrier high up inside the chimney so we don't have the problem of baby bats falling down into the fireplace. I rescued about 12 of them this summer. This is why we are getting rid of the woodstove insert so we have access to the bats. But we have to make sure we don't get any more in the house. Most of them were caught easily, but not always. And one poor fellow got bit by one of our cats. That led to the poor guy having to be tested for rabies at OSU. He was negative as I thought, but we had to be sure. There have only been about 6 cases of rabies in Oregon this year, but it does occur. -
Betsy Becker 10/24/2016 2:43 PMI made sure lunch was free of distraction--it is such a hard habit to break! To just focus on eating and nothing else. I didn't use to do that so much. But just gotten in a bad habit. I'm feeling much better (for the most part) and so will get out the raincoat for my 30-minute walk tonight!
