Christine Reis 10/28/2016 8:31 AMAs today is the last day, I see that my potential tally for preventing food waste from going into the landfill: 10 lbs!!!! These small amounts really add up. There really needs to be work done to help shift our cultural mindset of food ending up in the trash, and challenges like this really help. -
Christine Reis 10/26/2016 4:22 PMI may have looked a little strange at dinner out the other night, but I actually brought my own tupperware for any leftovers. Since this is Portland and the food portions are huge, of course there were leftovers. I used my own containers AND my own bag to take it with. -
Christine Reis 10/24/2016 5:04 PMI went through my fridge and cleaned out a few things that had gone bad. Since starting to compost, I have tried very hard not to waste any food. This was the first time in a long time I barely had to throw out (well, compost) anything! Paying attention really makes a difference. Even if it's getting composted, it's still a good idea to not waste food in general. -
Christine Reis 10/23/2016 11:35 AMI finally looked up all those odds and ends I can't throw in my regular curbside recycling. I was very surprised that Metro had a whole search engine tool on their "Find a Recycler" page. I started with batteries and ended up searching for so many things, such as bicycle inner tubes and yoga mats, and was able to find places that took these things. -
Christine Reis 10/18/2016 4:58 PMIt took a few minutes to call the "opt out" number on the bottom of my junk mail, but I am really looking forward to not getting a bunch of promotional junk mail. I still have to contact other companies to stop sending me catalogs, but this was a start. -
Christine Reis 10/17/2016 6:20 PMLeft a few reusable totes in my backpack and I totally used them today! Thanks, past me :) -
Christine Reis 10/16/2016 6:53 PMLiving in an apartment building is tough for composting. However, we use the silicon container in the freezer to store our compostables until I can take them in. Makes all the difference in the amount of garbage I have to take out each week. -
Christine Reis 10/14/2016 9:40 AMPlanning for caffeine is really my challenge. When I leave the house in the morning I have to think about if I want coffee in the afternoon. Sometimes I just grab my reusable mug and take it anyway. This small effort of planning helps me prevent the use of disposable cups.
