Create Your Own Action

Zero waste

To see how much waste is crated in the allotted time when I will not buy items that ave much packaging I buy in bulk and use the city's recycling and composting bins and use reusable containers and as little paper products as possible plus throwing in any tid bits I can think of each day to be more sustainable. i will be also photo documenting this process to show what I'm getting myself into.

I made a sandwich and ate out tonight so no wast for my final day yay!
     and on last final tidbit..
Don't know what to do with your trash and hate trash?
    Make art with it.
Express how much you hate plastic with a life size replica whale sculpted out of plastic you collected from the beach.
Tell the world what you feel about trash and maybe change the world along the way.
I have saved all my paper bus passes to create a reflective vest you can wear while walking.
I save bottle caps and other found objects and incorporate them into the jewelry I make.
I like to crochet plastic bags into market bags and padded floor mats.
you should create art out of trash too!
What would you make and what would it be out of?

Five day's in a row whoo hoo! and only one more to go.
I had bought a coffee pot, which saved my live today because I had a migraine and no pain relievers in the house so I finally took the little sucker out of its box, which everything was recyclable! I even got recycled bio- filters. making my own coffee at home saves money and waste. As after I have purchased reusable mugs, the maker it's self, the only waste is the grounds and filter which make really good compost.
With the migraine I only ate soup and lots of toast today, so I'm glad I had made such a big soup pot up last  week and saved in jars to eat later, like today,
when I didn't feel well and didn't have the energy to cook. i am so amazed that i have managed zero waste for this many days. its good to know that it is truly possible.

    Mottainai!
Japanese to English best translation would be,
    Reduce, Reuse, recycle!
This is a very intrinsic part of Japanese culture that needs to be employed by all I feel.
A favorite pot that is broken is not thrown away but is given gold gilt bindings and a new lease on life.
Recycle! And I don’t just mean the stuff the city says to put in their bins, find ways to reuse items. Don't buy from big box chain stores instead support local and small trusted businesses that sell recycled materials. Buy from the thrift stores, buy used, Barrow a friends, trade someone. Tailor your clothing when you go up or down a size and get your shoes mended. Up cycle reusing an item in a new way. Reduce your foot print and others at the same time. As well as being a solution to our waste problem.
Today I took a banana and had some leftover pizza so zero waste again.
Here's a picture of my recycled backpack.

Today i had no waste once again as everything that i used to make a pizza for dinner went into the recycle or compost.
Composting in the city is  nice because if you want to, but you don’t have room for your own you still have the option to do so. Using bins that the city supplies.
Lasagna layer method where u just layer things and don’t turn. Covering organic matter with leaves or lawn clippings.
Barrel that gets turned often makes quicker compost for small garden spaces, but is stinkier I would imagine unless it has a very snug lid.
A bin you dig into and cover your scraps up in
A pile that is layered heats up and then is turned
Compost must head upto degrees to cook harmful bacteria's and for proper decomposition to take place.
A good pile takes a while before its ready for use. One to three years depending on the composition of materials placed into the pile and the depth and weather conditions.

i am having a harder time tying to log in every day that apparently is my challenge for i know im doing what i need to everyday i just am not used to having t o blog every day yet.
so today i go my lunch/breakfast in a compstable box and had soup again for dinner so no waste.
now that it's getting colder i am reminded to;Leave the room turn off the light! Close doors to extra rooms not in use and cover or close vents in them as well to conserve your heat/electricity.
I Switched some bulbs to LED's today. I have to recycle the paper container is all.
Put on a sweater, crawl under a blanket and try not to turn up the heat past 72 degrees as its not that cold out yet. My grandma never put it past 69 buuurrr. She always said to make sure you have your three layers on I would say "But It's summer!". My naturopath says to have a full layer when its cold and windy so your not loosing any energy.
How about learning to knit/crochet your own sweater scarf or hat? I like to crochet all sorts of things even wash cloths.

i had a sticker on my banana and a bar wrapper along with the plastic tab from the items i bought at goodwill. I am taking in some clothes taking to thrift store, earns you a tax credit slip for your donation. While I was there I found and awesome halloween costume for only $7.99. I also found a lovely vase I will be using for my floral class. I had been considering another prepackaged costume that would have ended
up costing me around a hundred dollars for all the parts, and considering it's only for one day that’s pretty silly if you really get down to it.
Not only did I save money I kept useful items in circulation rather than them finding their way into a landfill. Like almost all other products we buy do on average only what was it Story of Stuff said, something like only 3% of the things we buy aren't in a landfill in six months. That’s absolutely staggering!

Today I took my soup for lunch in a jar, brought my own spoon and used a cloth napkin.
I know I'm saving water by only taking 8-12 min shower every other day.As it isn't summer anymore and I'm not a very stinky person.
On average our household does a load of washing and drying two times a week and a load of dishes twice a week.
I like to save water for plants by collecting in pitchers half finished glasses of water, when you turn on to get hot water and wash veggies. Some times I even save my bath water.
I've been considering making a video about how much a difference in water use there is between when you wash dishes or veggies with the water just flowing down the drain compared to using the two tub soak and wash method.

    Day Three

Buying in bulk saves you money and you throw away less. I like to buy my teas from Jasmine Pearl teas alot of their teas they roast and blnd in house from local growers. They use reusable, resealable bags and you can also take your own containers or they have a lovely selection to choose from. I also use a washable stainless steel container and mugs when I drink my tea so no waste there. When you buy individual coffees and teas there is so much more waste. I have had a problem with this for a while now and had already transitioned in this area years ago. This is why I have had very little garbage so far.

    Day Two
I used a box again for my sandwich and only drank water in my bottle today. Made homemade soup for dinner so a plastic chicken wrapper was leftover as everything else was recyclable or Compostable.
Continuing to not use paper napkins or tissues  and use cotton hankies as pictured above  instead.
I had purchased a pair of eco-bamboo garden gloves which were made in Salem for myself, luckily only the plastic tabs holding the price tag were the only non recyclable bits and they were very small.
I have a recycled backpack that I bought just for rainy day just like this. When I had been shopping online for Water proof backpacks they were all over a hundred dollars then by coincidence I found one with discount while on a visit to my favorite shop Cargo made mostly out of rice bags. An item manufactured in bulk that are usually thrown away but are still in plenty useful condition and water proof, brilliant, pretty and functional, quite the find! And it had a reusable pretty price tag bonus.
Trying to be more aware of my carbon footprint i have a three month bus pass so I save money, gas and the air riding in a vehicle that was already heading my way. And I am seriously considering selling my car because it gets used so seldom that I could rent one when needed.
